Position Overview | Prepare, design, test, and/or execute instructional experiments or demonstrations and research. May procure, build, transport, operate, and maintain equipment and materials. Train faculty, staff, and students in the use of facilities/equipment; may include curriculum development. Assist with scheduling of space and equipment for research, instruction, and other functions. Assist with laboratory safety and security. Interact well with a diverse student population. Prepare and maintain microbiology laboratories – BIOL 203 & BIOL 402; Assist with Microbial Genetics Laboratory – BIOL 519, Immunology Laboratory – BIOL 504, Virology Laboratory – BIOL 513, and Pathogenic Microbiology Laboratory – BIOL 507. |
Job Description | 40% Set up teaching laboratories with sufficient media, and necessary equipment and supplies in coordination with Laboratory Program Director, instructors, teaching assistants, and other Laboratory Coordinators. Participate in and contribute to discussions on laboratory procedures. Prepare buffers, reagents, and stains used in the labs, and ensure an adequate stock of chemicals, equipment, and supplies for the laboratories. Interact well with faculty, Lab Director, other Lab Coordinators, teaching assistants, and a diverse population of students. 30% Oversee the safety and cleanliness of work areas and teaching laboratories. Follow all necessary safety guidelines and procedures, and ensure that safety procedures are followed by the students and teaching assistants. Arrange for routine repairs to the infrastructure, e.g. leaking faucets; “dead” fans in the air handling equipment, incubators, and refrigerators, etc. Decontaminate and dispose of laboratory waste streams (Autoclave and dispose of microbial waste - prepare chemical waste for EHS pickup). 20% Oversee the maintenance, repair, and purchasing of equipment in work areas and teaching labs. Prepare instructions and signage to guide proper operation and use of equipment. Clean and maintain the teaching equipment, e.g. microscopes, pipetters, centrifuges, water baths, etc. Provide equipment and advice to other biology lab courses, e.g. Genetics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology. 10% Supervise student laboratory assistants. Assist other Laboratory Coordinator as needed. Perform other tasks assigned by Laboratory Program Director and KU Undergraduate Biology Program director. |
