Senior Systems Security Engineer

 

The University of Vermont (UVM) is looking for a Systems Security Engineer to help develop and maintain the security of our enterprise infrastructure.  In this Engineering role, you will contribute to operational security efforts including intrusion detection and prevention, vulnerability management and scanning, system and network logging, and analysis.  You will implement, manage, and integrate systems and software in support of Enterprise Technology Services’ information security mission.  And you will manage information security projects of significant impact, developing a deep understanding of UVM’s information ecosystem, and designing both systems and workflows to detect and prevent intrusion.  Qualified candidates will have a background in cybersecurity or systems engineering.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience, plus four years of work experience in systems/network/security engineering.
  • Proficiency in the technical concepts underpinning internet-connected enterprise services.
  • Proficiency programming in languages popular for orchestration/automation (e.g., Python, PowerShell, Perl, Rust, Go).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and interpersonal.
  • Ability to work and manage projects in a collaborative, cross-departmental, team environment.
  • Proven problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate risks, costs, and benefits of security measures.

 

Desired Experience:

  • Intrusion detection and prevention, cybersecurity incident response, endpoint/network forensics, or continuous security monitoring.
  • Implementing security measures across hybrid cloud/on-premises environments.
  • Applying machine learning techniques to information security problems.
  • Hardening servers, applications, and databases.
  • Network management with Cisco equipment.
  • Security information and event management (SIEM), vulnerability management tools, firewalls.
  • Configuration management systems.
  • Evaluating competing technology products and negotiating with vendors/service providers.
