Laboratory Support Supervisor
The State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa, is seeking a Laboratory Support Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of Client Services, Central Services, Accessioning, and Media/Glassware, of the Branch Laboratory located in Ankeny Iowa. This position is a working supervisor role. The laboratory departments are responsible for handling incoming client inquiries, processing incoming specimens, and entering sample data into the laboratory information management system (LIMS). The units also fulfill outgoing collection container orders, prepare media and provide glassware for analytical sections. The Laboratory Support Supervisor is responsible for all operational aspects, including but not limited to, performance management, budgeting, payroll, team building, process improvement, and problem-solving. This position is the liaison to the testing areas.
The State Hygienic Laboratory’s main facilities are headquartered on the University of Iowa's Research Park campus northwest of Iowa City in Coralville. Additional testing facilities are part of the Iowa Laboratory Facilities in Ankeny, a Des Moines suburb.
Since 1904, the State Hygienic Laboratory has been at the forefront of public health issues in Iowa. As the state’s public health and environmental laboratory, the Hygienic Laboratory serves all of Iowa’s 99 counties through disease detection, environmental monitoring, and newborn and maternal screening.
- Qualifications:
Education or Equivalency Required
Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, laboratory science, business, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrate at least six months of direct supervision of professional staff.
- Demonstrate high proficiency with Microsoft Office software.
- Demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship management skills.
- Ability to perform tasks that require accuracy and detail-level attention at a working level of proficiency.
- Demonstrates extensive, typically one to three years, customer service skills.
Highly Desirable Qualifications
- Demonstrate one to three years of direct supervision of professional staff, is preferred.
- Experience with laboratory information systems/laboratory information management systems.
Desirable Qualifications
- Previous experience working in a laboratory setting.
- Experience working with and complying with non-negotiable deadlines.
