One current vacancy with the Health and Human Service Agency in Visalia. Incumbent for this vacancy must have the ability to speak, read, and write Spanish. This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill the current bilingual vacancy and future vacancies that may not require bilingual skills. The anticipated life of the list is six months.
Typical DutiesInterview patients to obtain medical information and measure vital signs, weight, and height; assist physicians in examining patients; explain treatment procedures to patients; prepare and administer medications by intradermal, subcutaneous, or intramuscular injection; administer medication orally, sublingually, topically, vaginally or rectally, or by providing a single dose to a patient for immediate self-administration, or by inhalation to adults and children; perform skin tests; collect and prepare lab specimens, including urine, sputum, semen, stool, and blood; perform basic lab tests; perform venipuncture or skin puncture for the purpose of drawing blood or to collect samples of blood; prepare patients for x-rays; perform electrocardiogram tests; remove sutures or staples from superficial incisions or lacerations; perform ear lavage to remove impacted cerumen; apply and remove bandages and dressings; apply orthopedic appliances, remove casts, splints and other external devices, select and adjust crutches to patient and instruct patient in proper use of crutches; dispose of contaminated supplies; sterilize medical instruments; administer childhood immunizations as ordered by provider; input immunization records into database; register patients and assess eligibility for various programs; arrange examining room instruments and equipment; order and maintain supplies and equipment; keep waiting and examining rooms neat and clean; answer phones, greet patients and schedule appointments; update and file medical records; complete insurance forms and send out correspondence; arrange hospital admission and lab services.
Employment StandardsEducation - Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program which included training in venipuncture, skin puncture, and injections;
Knowledge of - Medical terminology; medical processes and procedures sufficient to perform routine patient care; math sufficient to use measuring instruments; alphabetical and numerical filing systems.
Skill/Ability to - Interview patients to obtain medical information and take vital signs; perform basic medical procedures including administering injections, drawing blood, removing sutures, performing ear lavage, and giving electrocardiogram tests; observe, report, and accurately record relevant information in patient records; perform venipuncture and finger sticks; collect and prepare lab specimens; prepare and administer medication and immunizations; accurately explain treatment procedures to patients; use computerized medical office systems; retain and recall information pertaining to specific procedures; read and interpret numbers on dials, gauges and meters; make observations and report areas of concern; take temperature, pulse and blood pressure; follow established protocols in conducting medical procedures; understand and follow verbal and written instructions; use patience, tact and courtesy with fellow employees and the general public; keep legible, accurate records; communicate effectively with others; adjust to changes in workload and assignments; put people at ease to gain confidence and cooperation; work with people in various emotional states; and to fill current vacancy the candidate must speak, read, and write Spanish.
License/Certificates – Possession of a valid Medical Assistant certificate; possession of, or ability to obtain, a CPR certificate; and a valid California driver’s license.
