Job Title: General Manager/Editor - Stanwood Camano News
Reports To: Publisher
1. Schedule -- Salaried. Flexible schedule, typically 40 or more hours per week that may include night or weekend work as required. Days may begin early and end late depending on editing, management and production requirements.
2. Overview Of Job Responsibilities -- The General Manager is the key operations manager in overseeing day-to-day general management of the organization. This position will maintain primary responsibility of day to day management, planning content, sections and supervising and coordinating employees' activities and schedules. The general manager will be called on to run point on day-to-day coordination with Skagit Publishing for printing and other department cooperation.
3. Minimum Qualifications -- Bachelor or other four-year degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent. Prior experience in a lead role in a news organization and management. Professional proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English. Typing speed of 40 words per minute. Valid driver's license and proof of insurance. Basic literacy in computer software, including word processing and Internet browsing/research.
4. Preferred Qualifications -- Previous experience as a supervising editor or manager; demonstrated growth and progressive responsibilities as a manager.
5. Essential Functions

* Organize and plan news coverage, setting processes and procedures as necessary to ensure smooth operations.
* Plan effectively for projects including but not limited to the phonebook and annual specialty publications.
* Communicate clearly with reporters to help them develop coverage strategies and story ideas.
* Meet and enforce deadlines.
* Communicate clearly with staff and set clear performance expectations.
* Make quick, confident, informed decisions, act promptly and follow through effectively.
* Be familiar with current libel, public access and open meeting regulations.
* Have familiarity with the community, its history, issues and leading personalities.
* Manage time effectively.
* Maintain regular attendance.

6. Additional Job Functions - Assist in budgeting, financial reporting, hiring, community relationships and assist the Publisher as appropriate.
7. Work Environment - The Stanwood Camano News is a deadline-driven environment that requires steady leadership skills and consistent focus. The General Manager should maintain a calm, objective and professional demeanor in adverse or emergency situations. This general manager must cordially handle inquiries or observations from the public, including angry responses.
