At St. Alexius Hospital, our goal is to deliver the best healthcare available in St. Louis’ south city. Our mission is “rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ and is manifested in the values of compassion and respect for the dignity of all persons”. As reflected in our mission, we strive to meet the holistic needs of the diverse population we serve. On September 21, 1869, Brother Bonaventure Thelen purchased five acres for $25,000 at Carondelet and Osage Street. This location later became known as South Broadway. Over 140 years later, St. Alexius is comprised of both our Broadway and Jefferson Campuses. The facility totals 337 inpatient beds. Our Jefferson Campus is from 1859 and is the oldest existing Hospital west of the Mississippi. We are a general medical/surgical hospital that also offers psychiatric care. St. Alexius partners with both St. Louis University and Sisters of Saint Mary in a physician residency program. St. Alexius’ bariatric program, NewStart, is one of the largest in the Midwest. Our Lutheran School of Nursing has been educating nurses for over 110 years. St. Alexius outreaches to patients with three medical office buildings at Lemay Ferry, Hampton and on the Jefferson Campus. While you may know St. Alexius as the site of the only documented exorcism in the United States, the story that became a bestseller and the foundation for a popular movie it was only a minor event in the long story of the Alexian Hospital.
