Springhill, Erie, Pennsylvania's premier continuing care retirement community, has an exciting opportunity available to work as a full-time Cook within our Dining Services department. Responsibilities include assisting in hot and cold food preparation, as well as practicing high standards of food sanitation, infection control, safety, quality assurance and hospitality. The successful candidate should have a least one (1) year experience in quantity food production.
Hours for this position are as follows: 40 hours per week

Job Responsibilities:
- Handles and prepares food, involving the preparation of meat, vegetables, soups, sauces, bakery items, salads, etc. as determined by the daily menu.
- Prepares food that is palatable and appetizing in appearance.
- Practices proper garnishing techniques with each meal.
- Follows written menus and utilizes standardized recipes for each item produced.
- Understands and is able to effectively prepare therapeutic diets.
- Avoids food waste, and recycles leftover foods into cafe meals, soups, or items for the Sunday Brunch.
- Assumes responsibility for meeting meal schedules, without precooking food and holding it thereby compromising its quality.
- Sets up food in the steam table at the proper temperature; maintains the proper temperature for service.
- Plates food according to the resident's diet and food order.
- Documents food temperatures for each food item being served. If the temperatures do not meet the food standards, reheats or chills food to the desired level in compliance with the
- Department of Health guidelines.
- Keeps walk-in coolers/freezers in proper order by returning items to assigned places.
- Assists with proper dish machine service as needed.
- Documents (communication notebook) any situations, concerns and/or praises pertaining to the Food Service Department.
- Completes daily sanitation assignments and cleans throughout the meal service so that all work areas are maintained in a neat, clean & safe manner; uses appropriate protective equipment when cleaning (latex gloves, etc); also sweeps & mops floor.
- Volunteers and demonstrates active participation in campus wide and departmental committees.
- Follows established safety procedures, food handling techniques, hand washing, etc. Also safety regulations, to include fire protection/prevention, smoking regulations, infection control, blood/bodily fluids, correct body mechanics, good personal hygiene, isolation precaution procedures etc.
- Practices safe operation of all dining equipment/machines.
- Follows all facility and departmental policies and procedures.
- Is aware of Resident Rights and demonstrates a respect for our residents and these rights.
- Adheres to Standards of Attendance.
- Performs other duties, as assigned.
Experience:
Minimum of one (1) years experience in quantity food production.
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Formal food production education preferred.
- Food handler's certification preferred.
Specific Requirements:
- Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
- Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
- Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
- Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position, including possible frequent interruptions during the workday.
- Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility.
- Must be able to safely operate equipment necessary for position.
- Must be able to perform the essential physical tasks of lifting and carrying heavy trays, moving chairs and tables, standing and moving constantly throughout the entire shift.
- Must be able to repeatedly lift items up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to provide assistance which will include balancing, crouching, fingering, grasping, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive movement, standing and stooping repeatedly throughout shift.
- Must be aware of and able to work and walk at times on wet slippery floor areas.
- May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
- Must be able to cooperate and work effectively with other dining team members.
Working Conditions:
- Will work in a well lighted and ventilated area.
- Will be subject to frequent interruptions.
- Will be subject to constantly changing temperatures in the work area, near ovens, seasonal weather, etc.
- May be required to work beyond normal working hours.
- May be subject to exposure to infectious waste, disease conditions (e.g. TB, AIDS, Hepatitis B Virus, etc.) and hazardous chemicals.
