This position is responsible for machining, brazing, soldering, and hand fitting elaborate one-of-a-kind apparatuses in the Engineering Machine Shop and in the College of Sciences Faculty/Student Instrumentation Shop. This includes the use of all the machines commonly encountered in a machine shop as well as a wide range of materials including metals, ceramics and plastics. Responsible for assisting in the development of conceptual designs and for fabricating equipment and components on a variety of research and design projects, to meet the needs of students, staff, faculty and researchers. Makes detailed suggestions in the design, construction and/or modification of these apparatuses. Manages the operations of the College of Sciences Faculty/Student Instrumentation Shop.
Required Qualifications:
Considerable knowledge of metal shop machinery, equipment and tools, especially the mill and lathe. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to read and accurately follow technical plans and drawings. Ability to safely and skillfully operate a full range of metal shop machinery, equipment, and tools. This includes computer aided design, and metal fabrication, woodworking, and plastics. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to demonstrate, train, and instruct students, staff and faculty on proper usage and handling of shop equipment and tools. Ability to make arithmetic computations where required. Considerable semi-skilled experience maintaining, operating and repairing scientific or technical equipment in the areas of mechanical, electromechnical, electronics or in other specialized categories including construction and fabrication. Considerable years’ experience of trade school or technical arts training or completion of a full military specialization in the types of equipment mentioned above may be substituted. Some experience with precision work or requiring trade or craft skills working with a variety of unique materials.
Preferred Qualification:
Ability to learn critical welding using advanced welding techniques and equipment.
