Director of Finance
Position Purpose
The Director of Finance directs all accounting and finance functions of the MSUM Foundation, maintaining financial records and fiscal controls for the organization. The position is part of the Foundation leadership team and reports in to the VP for University Advancement/Executive Director of the MSUM Foundation. This person oversees the processing of contributions to and disbursements from 400+ individual funds, as well as oversees the management of over $40M in assets. In addition, this position is responsible for summarizing, analyzing and reporting the financial activities of the Foundation to internal and external audiences, including the annual audit and financial statement preparation, in addition to multiple other reports. The Director of Finance provides coordination with offices at Minnesota State University Moorhead for all policies, procedures and programs that have an effect on the financial operation of the Foundation.
Principle Responsibilities
1. Management
Work as part of the management team to establish overall goals and strategies for increasing private support to the Foundation. Maintain annual work plan and establishes regular reporting on progress toward work plan goals.
2. Financial Reporting
Oversee the development and preparation of standardized and ad-hoc reports utilizing data from two separate systems, analyze information, and make recommendations for a variety of constituents, including the Executive Director of the Foundation and the Foundation Board on both a scheduled and ad-hoc basis. Assist and advise authorized signers of Foundation accounts throughout the University regarding information requests, policies and procedures, appropriate expenditures, and required reporting.
3. Financial Management
Manage all accounting and fiscal functions of the Foundation so that adequate and appropriate financial records and controls are maintained.
4. Independent Audit
Prepare all documentation necessary for the annual independent audit of the Foundation’s financial statements and interact with the auditors during fieldwork and reporting to the Foundation board.
5. Property/Asset Management
Ensure the safekeeping and appropriate reporting of all assets and properties owned by and/or under the control of the Foundation.
6. Fiscal Policy and Planning
Along with the Executive Director of the Foundation, establish fiscal policies, procedures, and operating budgets.
7.Staff Supervision and Training
Lead, supervise, and direct department and contract personnel.
Relationships
The Director of Finance must develop and maintain good working relationships with a variety of constituents, including Board members, donors, investment advisors, auditors, staff, and University administration, faculty, and staff. Interactions with these constituents will occur in person, by telephone, via electronic communication, and through written correspondence. The person in this position is expected to present a positive image of the Foundation and University.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Minimum Qualifications
- 4 Year Accounting degree or 4+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Knowledge:
- Considerable knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
- Considerable knowledge of the state's appropriation, budgetary, and accounting systems.
- Working knowledge of fiscal analysis methods.
- Working knowledge of federal government accounting, auditing, and reporting requirements.
- Ability to prepare and interpret complex fiscal records and reports, recognize problems, and effect solutions.
- Ability to relate accounting to overall functions of the department.
- Ability to write and speak effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, public, and other employees.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA
- Experience and knowledge of higher education fundraising and non-profit organizations
- 1 year of supervisory or lead work experience.
