General Job Description (not for this actual job posting):
Dry cleaners are responsible for cleaning, pressing, ironing, mending and sewing a variety of different items, but most often clothing. This may involve hand-cleaning items using chemicals, solvents, bleach, detergents or other cleaning items to remove spots and stains. Dry cleaners are also responsible for operating machines such as washers, dryers, dry cleaners and extractors. They must often presoak, sterilize, scrub or dry contaminated or stained items before loading them into the machines. Some dry cleaners offer additional services such as ironing, pressing or steaming certain items before pickups. Dry cleaners may also offer repair services, mending or sewing damaged clothing and other items. Many dry cleaners are also independent business owners, so they are responsible for updating client records, managing payroll and keeping the financial records of the business in order.
Requirements
There are no educational requirements for a dry cleaner, though some employers require at least a college education. Some dry cleaners choose to take classes in cleaning techniques or sewing, but this is not required. However, a general knowledge of fabrics, dyes, solvents and cleaning solutions is valuable. Dry cleaners should also possess good customer service skills, as they must often interact with clients who are dropping off or picking up their items. They should also be detail oriented in order to find small stains and areas of damage on certain items. Dry cleaners typically receive short-term, on-the-job training when they first begin, which can include cleaning techniques, stain treatments and fabric cleaning.
