As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic you will learn to perform a variety of diagnostic, maintenance, and repair tasks, building the skills needed to perform journey level range of field and shop work. Responsibilities will include the service and repair of the County's on/off road equipment, medium/heavy duty trucks, emergency and man-lift vehicles, park and road maintenance equipment, construction equipment, and generators. Additionally, Heavy Equipment Mechanics install, test, and perform technical and mechanical work, and enter data into computer-based, recordkeeping systems. Work is performed both at a maintenance facility and in the field under varying conditions, with occasional weekend work.
Currently we are looking for candidates with:
- Experience diagnosing and repairing medium/heavy duty trucks, and off-road equipment including loaders, backhoes, tractors, trailers, and miscellaneous equipment (e.g. mowers)
- Certifications in: Automotive Service Excellence, California Council on Diesel Education and Technology, and/or Valid Motor Vehicle Air-Conditioning Systems
- Knowledge of the theory, maintenance, and repair of diesel equipment particulate matter emission devices and systems
- Experience participating in the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Basic Inspection of Terminals (BIT) program
- Experience using computerized maintenance and repair software systems
- The ability to perform acetylene, arc, and electric welding on various types of metals
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- A Class A commercial driver's license is desirable
