The County Attorney’s Office of Chesterfield County is seeking a Senior Assistant or Deputy County Attorney to provide legal counsel to county officials and employees; to be responsible for a variety of complex legal matters; and to represent the county and its officials and employees in litigation, both as part of litigation teams, as lead counsel on litigation teams and individually. Perform other work as work as required.
Senior Assistant Attorney requires a juris doctorate from an accredited law school; six years of litigation experience and five years of local government experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Deputy County Attorney requires graduation from an accredited law school; seven years of experience in local government law; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Candidates must be licensed members of the Virginia State Bar in good standing; must demonstrate considerable knowledge of state and federal civil law principles and practices, as well as the procedures governing proceedings before state and federal courts (trial and appellate), boards, commissions and administrative agencies; and must have considerable progressively responsible experience practicing civil law and litigating complex cases. Lead counsel experience in trial and appellate litigation is preferred. Candidates will be judged, in significant part, by the quality of their legal writing, including trial and appellate brief writing. Candidates will also be judged, in part, by references who are familiar with their character and professional achievements.
Good driving record required. Must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months.
