Director of Transportation Safety
The Director of Safety over transportation is responsible for ensuring a safe working environment for employees that is free of recognized hazards, which prevents workers’ compensation and auto claims, while ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, DOT, FMCSR and company policies.
Primary Duties:
- Directs the Safety in the transportation department
- Manages Safety, Workers Comp Administrator and Hazardous Materials Manager
- Ensures employees are trained in proper safety protocol according to DOT regulations and company policies
- Oversees worker’s compensation claims, auto claims, Hazmat issues, DOT audits and weekly reports
- Ensures compliance of DOT and OSHA regulations
- Coordinates responses to insurance companies, OSHA and DOT inquiries
- Oversees driver qualification and training program
- Coordinates training for new acquisitions/location start ups
- Duties as required and assigned
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree from a 4 year college or university
- Minimum 5 years related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Knowledge of the following: CFR 29 Labor (OSHA) and CFR 49 Transportation (DOT)
- Knowledge of claims reporting and handling (work comp, auto, general liability)
- Knowledge in the storage, handling and shipping of hazardous materials
- Knowledge of NFPA regulations with regards to flammable liquids, corrosives, etc.
- PC proficiency to include Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Essential Skills:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of
- managers, customers, and co-workers
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations
- where only limited standardization exists
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
The employee is regularly exposed to ambient lighting and temperate climate conditions.
