Description
The City of Redding is establishing an eligibility list to fill two new full-time vacancies, as well as subsequent vacancies that occur during the life of the list. The Utility Arborist prunes, shapes, and removes trees and vegetation using hand tools, power tools, and other equipment; operates aerial devices; and works from elevated platforms.

Examples of Duties
Operate aerial devices, brush chippers, and works from elevated platforms; prune, shape and remove trees, including tree pruning in close proximity to high voltage power lines, using gas, hydraulic and power chain saws, rope rigging, other hand tools and equipment; clear and remove limbs, branches and vegetation in close proximity to high and low voltage power lines, poles and transformers; hang banners and other special projects for City departments requiring an aerial device; clean, sharpen and maintain tools and equipment; may be called to duty outside regular work hours for both scheduled and emergency work; will be required, on occasion, to climb trees to remove vegetation and prune trees; apply Tree Growth Regulators (TGR's); and perform related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of: Modern tree pruning methods and safety practices with regard to high and low voltage line clearance work.
Ability to: Interact effectively with the public and other employees; skillfully operate an aerial device; operate gas and hydraulic powered saws, pruners; operate chipper and stump removal equipment; work effectively in precarious positions at heights significantly above the ground; perform tree rescue; and perform moderate and heavy physical labor, including lifting in excess of 50 pounds.
Education & Experience: Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; typical education would include a high school diploma or equivalent. Typical experience would include two years of line clearance tree trimming experience.
Special Requirements: Must meet CAL/OSHA Title 8 requirements for line clearance tree trimming (18 months minimum experience). Must currently possess and maintain certification as a "Certified Arborist" issued by the International Society of Arboriculture (copy of certification must be attached to employment application - see Application Process below). Possession of California Class B driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment. Must be able to enter and work in confined spaces, participate in the Confined Space Program, and perform confined space rescue.
