Water Resources Treatment Plant Maintenance Mechanic I
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
Performs technical and skilled trades work maintaining and repairing specialized machinery and equipment in a water or wastewater treatment plant and related facilities; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Instrumentation and Maintenance Supervisor.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms-length, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
Maintaining and repairing treatment plant equipment; assisting with the installation of plant equipment; operating a treatment plant. Performs repairs on pump motors and related equipment used for water or wastewater treatment. Uses hand, bench, and machine tools in the repair and maintenance of pumps, motors, valves, and other plant machinery and equipment. Replaces and repairs bearings, shafts, sleeves, and other parts; lubricates and changes oil in equipment. Makes periodic inspections of equipment to ensure that equipment is functioning properly; adjusts, repairs, and replaces parts.
Installs electrical units; mounts conduits and wiring into power source; troubleshoots electrical problems. Maintains, repairs, installs, and troubleshoots electrical and mechanical equipment; repairs and maintains generators. Performs a variety of plumbing repairs; cleans and paints plant equipment. Performs general plant construction including pouring and forming concrete. Operates medium to heavy construction equipment.
Fabricates equipment; welds, cuts, and mills parts when required. Operates the treatment plant when required; performs duties of treatment plant operator as qualified. Performs related tasks as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the electrical and mechanical trades; general knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with general maintenance operations and ability to take and enforce appropriate safety precautions; ability to work from sketches and to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; skill in the use and care of bench and hand tools, machines, and equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and minimal experience in water and/or wastewater treatment plant or large industrial facility maintenance work.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
