JOB PURPOSE / REASON
- To perform specialized duties in areas of school food service that support school based meal programs in accordance with School Board policies and procedures, and state, and federal Child Nutrition Program regulations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Experience & Training
- Knowledgeable in child and adolescent nutrition
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION:
- Registered and Licensed Dietitian
- ServSafe Manager Level Certification (if not already certified, must become certified
- within first 30 days of employment)
- Valid South Carolina Driver's License
OTHER SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:
- Skill in comprehending and evaluating facts and problems associated with student food service situations, exercising sound judgment, and taking decisive and timely action in accordance with standard operating procedures
- Skill in gathering, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data, utilizing various statistical techniques, applying concepts to assist in formulating conclusions, and developing recommendations and solutions
- Skill in presenting information in a variety of formats
PRIMARY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ability to manage multiple complex tasks simultaneously and independently to meet deadlines
- Ability to develop bid specifications and market school menus
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written, utilizing tact and diplomacy
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with District staff, outside organizations, elected officials, and the general public
- Ability to provide educational and training assistance for Child Nutrition managers and other employees
- Coordinate commodity utilization including commodity processing and distribution of commodities to the schools
- Coordinate the dissemination of new products and ordering information at manager’s meetings
- Coordinate the evaluation of selected food samples before purchase for acceptability by conducting taste testing with students and staff
- Coordinate the development of the master cycle menu for Elementary Schools and Middle/High Schools
- Coordinate the evaluation of recipes in use and make adjustments to improve quality and acceptability of food products
- Oversee the department’s coordinated school health activities and nutrition education for students
- Serve as preceptor for the Medical University of South Carolina Dietetic Program in cooperation with nutrition services
- Write nutrition newsletters, articles, for distribution to students and the community
- Create special diets for students based on verifiable student dietary needs
- Adhere to diet restrictions and physician orders by developing menus supporting dietary care plans
- Assist in the development and nutritional analysis of all menus according to guidelines set forth by the United States Department of Agriculture via the National School
- Lunch Program and Child and Adult Care Food Program
- Provide training for parents in nutrition, meal planning, cooking activities, and health as applicable
- Liaison with organizations such as, the Lowcountry Food Bank, Green Heart Project, etc.
- Act as Child Nutrition liaison for District Wellness program
- Participate in professional development activities to maintain current knowledge of personnel rules, regulations, and practices
- Ability to accurately perform assigned tasks with little or no direction
- Ability to apply District policies, rules, regulations, and practices to a variety of food service related issues
- Ability to communicate and promote harmonious working relationships with staff, community partners, and stakeholders
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and effectively with attention to detail
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive or privileged information
SECONDARY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Apply for and manage all grants
- Perform other duties as assigned by executive director, director, or direct report
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
- Must be physically able to operate variety equipment including computers, copiers, fryers, ovens, steamers, various mixers, slicers, etc. Must be physically able to operate motor vehicles. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects
- Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform physical work in hot and cold environments inside of kitchens
- Must possess skills to meet deadlines for time sensitive projects
- Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
- Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations
