Dispatcher
This position is a Grade 21 with a present hourly range of $21.06 - $27.53 (DOQ).
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office Civil Service Commission, located in northern Minnesota, is accepting applications to establish an eligibility list. All vacancies will be filled from the eligibility list. Full time plus fringe benefits. Extensive background check will be performed. Written, oral, physical and psychological testing is required.
Requirements:
Must be a United States Citizen. Must have no Felony convictions. Requires High School Diploma or equivalent. Requires State certification for data entry operation into the Zuercher system and CJIS State and NCIC Federal computer networking systems. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Requires current First Aid and CPR certification. Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
A dispatcher receives all incoming 911 and Sheriff’s Department phone calls and transmits pertinent information by radio or telephone to appropriate law enforcement or emergency personnel enabling them to efficiently respond to crime scenes, emergency situations and/or civil disturbances.
WORK PERFORMED/JOB FUNCTIONS:
Receiving and screening all incoming phone calls, determining appropriate action and dispatching appropriate law enforcement or emergency personnel. Answer inquires or refer calls to appropriate personnel or agency(ies), receive and transmit radio messages and monitor radio traffic of law enforcement, fire, medical, civil defense, municipal utility and County Highway units infield. Log calls and record complaints and pertinent information onto an Initial Complaint Report, receive requests from emergency personnel and aid units requesting information, services or additional personnel. A dispatcher operates an in-house and State computer terminal to access information for department inquires, creates Initial Complaint Reports, runs Criminal Histories and other data process as required. Performs routine maintenance on all communications equipment or directs problem to appropriate authority. Monitors numerous radio frequencies with other CCSD personnel and other law enforcement agencies. Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Requires a thorough knowledge of the geographical layout, political and community service jurisdictions and high systems within the County. Should have considerable knowledge of FCC rules and regulations relating to law enforcement and other emergency services radio communications. Requires the ability to operate and maintain computer equipment. Requires the ability to make independent judgments when receiving calls, to discern information in a short period of time and take appropriate action. Requires a thorough knowledge of laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the department on a local, state and national level. Should possess the ability to recognize priorities during high activity periods and dispatch units accordingly. Ability to operate basic radio equipment, convey a calm and decisive demeanor when dealing with emergency telephone and radio system calls. Follow both oral and written instructions. Maintain several conversations simultaneously and coordinate activities in an effective and efficient manner thereof. This position shall be filled in accordance with civil service rules and regulations.
MINIMUM TRAINING, EXPERIENCE OR CERTIFICATIONS:
Must be a United States Citizen. Must have no Felony convictions. Requires High School Diploma or equivalent. One to two years post high school training/education in telecommunications, computer entry, sociology or related area or two to four years related experience in same. Requires State certification for data entry operation into the ENFORS system and CJIS State and NCIC Federal computer networking systems. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Requires current First Aid and CPR certification. Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Sedentary to light physical activities requiring stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, talking, hearing, and close vision. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 35 pounds. Typically in an office environment.
