General Summary:
The Director provides individual and group counseling services and coordinates programs for the students' education and enrichment. She/He promotes the psychological development of students and educates the campus community on mental health issues. This is an 11-month position.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist in the training of resident assistants and peer mediators to recognize mental health issues
  • Interpret educational and psychological tests
  • Research other counseling programs to enhance Bennett's services
  • Remain connected to new developments in the field
  • Provide solution focused individual therapy and group therapy for students.
  • Provide emergency intervention and crisis counseling
  • Oversee suicide assessment and crisis stabilization efforts, as well as prevention outreach
  • Refer students to community resources and specialists, as needed
  • Recruit and oversee counseling interns
  • Supervise the Sexual Assault Victims Advocate
  • Develop and manage a departmental budge
  • Create and implement an assessment plan, in alignment with Bennett College Learning Outcomes
  • Track and trend Counseling Services use and student needs to be relayed and reported to the Associate Vice- President of Student Affairs or their designee
  • Work in close collaboration with the Office of Accessibility Services when needed to service students
  • Create and implement educational programming related to mental health and wellness in collaboration with the Student Affairs team
  • Develop and implement Orientation presentations to educate incoming students about adjustment to college life.
  • Interface and collaborate with academic departments
  • Facilitate and/or coordinate trainings about the mental health and wellness of college students
  • Manage the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)
  • Serve on the Coordinator Community Response Team (CCRT)
  • Maintain knowledge of and relationships with community referral sources
  • Maintain and provide Mental Health and Wellness community resource list
  • Interface community mental health providers, as needed
  • Collaborate with Associate Vice President of Student Affairs or designee's office to facilitate medical withdrawals, as needed
  • Prepare and maintain all confidential records related to student treatments
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with State, Legal and Ethical guidelines
  • Maintain current State Licensure and continuing education credits
  • Other duties may be required as requested by the Associate Vice President of Student/or designee

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of ethical codes and guidelines governing the counseling profession
  • Knowledge of counseling techniques and theories
  • Knowledge of local and community resources
  • Skills in using computer software
  • Skills in conflict mediation and resolution
  • Skills in crisis intervention
  • Ability to present programs that address student needs
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to establish trust and maintain confidentially among College community

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work within a diverse community

Education and Experience:


  • Master's Degree in Counseling, Social Work or Psychology with at least three years of related experience
  • Licensed social worker or licensed professional counselor
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license
